So, I wanted to hook up my electric guitar to my computer for some recording. I needed to figure out this whole 6.35 mm jack connector thing.
Getting Started
First, I grabbed my guitar cable. You know, the standard one you use to plug into an amp. One end has this big, chunky plug – that’s the 6.35 mm (or 1/4 inch, as some people call it) connector.
The Challenge
My computer doesn’t have a hole that big! It only has those tiny little audio jacks. So, I needed a way to connect the big guitar plug to the small computer jack. I could use the adapters.
Finding a Solution
I have some adapters.
- I found a simple adapter. It had a big hole (for the 6.35 mm plug) on one end and a small plug (for the computer) on the other. I just plugged in everything, and it worked, kinda.
- Also,I found a USB audio interface. This thing is a bit fancier. It has a 6.35 mm input for my guitar, and it connects to the computer via USB. The sound quality should be way better.
Testing it Out
First, I tried the simple adapter. I plugged the guitar cable into the adapter, and then plugged the adapter into the computer’s microphone jack.I could hear my guitar, but the sound was kinda quiet and * I could hear my guitar, so it worked!
Next, I use the USB interface to connect my * looks better than the adapter.
My Recommendation
If you just want to mess around, the adapter is fine. But if you want better sound, I think you should get the interface, especially if you plan on recording.
