Okay, so I finally caved and got my kid a Gabb Watch. I was hesitant about getting them a phone, but this seemed like a good middle ground. Here’s how the setup went down, from unboxing to actually using the thing.
Unboxing and First Impressions
First thing’s first, we opened the box. Inside, there was the watch itself, a charging cable (magnetic, which is kinda cool), and a little instruction booklet. The watch felt pretty sturdy, not too bulky, which was a relief. My kid immediately wanted to put it on, so we did.
Charging it Up
Before we could do anything, we had to charge it. We connected the magnetic charger to the back of the watch – it snapped right on, pretty easy. Then, plugged the other end into a USB adapter, my phone charger and let it juice up. The screen showed a battery icon, so we knew it was charging.
Powering On and Initial Setup
Once it had some power, we held down the side button to turn it on. The Gabb logo popped up, and then it started walking us through the setup. First step was to select English.
Connecting to Wi-Fi
Next up we input our Wi-Fi information and input the password.
Pairing with the MyGabb App
This is where I had to grab my own phone. I downloaded the MyGabb app from the app store and created an account. Then, on the watch, it showed a QR code. I used the MyGabb app to scan that code, and boom – the watch and my phone were linked. This is how I manage the contacts and settings, so it’s pretty important.
Setting Up Contacts
Through the MyGabb app, I started adding contacts. I put in my number, my spouse’s, grandma’s – you know, the essentials. I made sure to mark myself as a parent contact, which gives me some extra control,I can add up to 10 contacts.
Exploring the Features
Once the contacts were in, my kid started messing around with the watch. It’s got a pretty simple interface. They figured out how to make calls pretty quickly (success!). We also explored the pre-set text messages,Gabb Go, and Lock Mode.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, the whole setup process was easier than I expected. It took maybe 20-30 minutes total. The MyGabb app is key for managing everything, so don’t skip that step. My kid’s happy to have a “phone” , and I’m happy knowing they can reach me if they need to, without all the extra stuff a smartphone comes with.
