Deciding Between Magic Mouse 3 vs 2? Read This First.

Okay, here’s my personal take on the Magic Mouse 3 versus 2, written in a casual, blog-style format:

So, I finally caved and “upgraded” my trusty old Magic Mouse 2 to the new Magic Mouse 3. I say “upgraded” because, honestly, I wasn’t sure if it was going to be worth it. I’d been using the 2 for ages, and it was fine. But, you know, shiny new thing syndrome got the best of me.

The Unboxing and First Impressions

First thing I did, ripped open the box. It’s the usual Apple packaging – minimal, sleek, all that jazz. Inside, the mouse, and a fancy braided USB-C to Lightning cable. Big point here: the 3 uses USB-C, while my old one was plain old Lightning.

Setting it Up and Getting Going

Pairing was, as you’d expect with Apple stuff, dead simple. Turned on Bluetooth on my Mac, flipped the switch on the bottom of the mouse (still hate that it’s on the bottom, by the way), and boom, connected. No dongles, no fuss.

Next, I tried to charging it. The charging port is still on the bottom. You can’t use it while it’s charging. It looks silly. Apple, why?!

Daily Use and How it Feels

  • The Feel: It feels… exactly the same as the Magic Mouse 2. Same shape, same weight, same smooth, multi-touch surface. If you’ve used the 2, you know what to expect.
  • The Scroll: I tested the scrolling. It’s still great, super smooth and responsive. I can zip through web pages and documents with ease.
  • Gestures: I swiped, I tapped and tested all my usual gestures. They all worked perfectly. Switching between spaces, Mission Control, all that good stuff.

I used it for a full workday. I did some photo editing, browsing the web, working on documents, I threw everything that I can do at it.

My Final Thoughts and Decision

After a week of solid use, here’s the blunt truth: the Magic Mouse 3 is basically the Magic Mouse 2 with a USB-C port. That’s it. Seriously.

If you’re perfectly happy with your Magic Mouse 2, don’t bother upgrading. You’re not missing anything except maybe the new braided cable(It’s really pretty!).

If you need a new mouse, and you like the Magic Mouse design (and don’t mind the charging port stupidity), then sure, grab the 3. It’s a good mouse, just… not a revolutionary one.

I did decide to return my magic mouse 3. To be honest, The old one still works great.
