MX Keys vs MX Mechanical: A Quick Comparison for Everyday Users

Okay, so I’ve been using the MX Keys for like, forever. It’s been my daily driver for both work and just messing around on my computer. But then, the MX Mechanical came out, and I was like, “Ooh, shiny new thing!” Gotta try it, right? So, that’s what I did.

The Great Keyboard Experiment Begins

First thing I did was unbox both of them, just to get a good side-by-side look. The MX Keys is all sleek and low-profile, while the MX Mechanical has this, well, mechanical look to it. It’s chunkier, sits higher, and just feels more… substantial, I guess?

Typing Feel: A World of Difference

This is where things get interesting. The MX Keys has those scissor-switch keys, which are pretty quiet and have a short travel distance. I was super used to them, you know? It’s like typing on a laptop, but a good laptop.

The MX Mechanical, though? Whoa. I got the one with the “Tactile Quiet” switches (brown switches, basically). It’s a totally different experience. You feel a little bump when you press the key, and there’s more travel. It’s not super loud, but definitely not as quiet as the MX Keys. It took some getting used to, that’s for sure. It almost felt like I was learning to type all over again!

  • MX Keys: Quiet, low-profile, short key travel.
  • MX Mechanical: More noticeable feedback, longer key travel, slightly louder (but not obnoxious).

Putting Them to the Test

I used both keyboards for everything – writing emails, coding, gaming (yeah, I game on a mechanical keyboard, don’t judge!), the whole nine yards.

For just everyday typing, I found myself going back to the MX Keys a lot. It’s just so comfortable and familiar. My fingers could fly across the keys without much effort.

But for coding… the MX Mechanical started to win me over. The tactile feedback felt more precise, like I was making fewer typos. It just felt… right for banging out lines of code.

Gaming was a mixed bag. I didn’t really notice a huge difference, to be honest. Both keyboards were responsive enough. It mostly came down to personal preference, and I think I still leaned towards the mechanical feel for games, just for that extra bit of feedback.

The Verdict? It’s Complicated

So, which one’s better? Honestly, it’s tough to say. It really depends on what you’re looking for.

If you want a quiet, comfortable keyboard for general use, the MX Keys is still a fantastic choice. It is great to type on.

But, if you want that tactile feedback, especially for coding or gaming, the MX Mechanical is definitely worth considering. It takes some getting used to, but once you do, it’s pretty awesome.

For me? I’m still switching between them, depending on what I’m doing. I guess I’m just a keyboard enthusiast now. And enjoying the best of both worlds.
