So, I’ve been messing around with wireless charging lately, and it’s been a bit of a rabbit hole. You know, Qi versus MagSafe, which one’s better, all that jazz. I figured I’d share my little experiment, ’cause why not?
First off, I grabbed my old phone that supports Qi charging. Nothing fancy, just a regular phone I had lying around. I also got my hands on a standard Qi charging pad – again, nothing special, just a basic one I picked up online.
The Qi Setup
I plugged in the Qi charger, placed my phone on it, and… it started charging. Pretty straightforward, right? The thing is, it was kinda slow. And if I didn’t place the phone just right, it wouldn’t always connect. I had to fiddle with it a bit to get it to work consistently. It felt a bit imprecise, you know? A little hit-or-miss.
- Pros: It worked.
- Cons: Slow, finicky placement.
The MagSafe Experiment
Then, I switched to my newer phone with MagSafe. I already had a MagSafe charger, so I didn’t need to buy anything extra. I just snapped the charger onto the back of the phone, and boom – instant connection. The magnets are surprisingly strong, it definitely won’t fall off easily.
The charging was noticeably faster. I didn’t do any scientific tests or anything, but it just felt quicker. Plus, I didn’t have to worry about aligning it perfectly. The magnets took care of that. It was just a much smoother experience overall.
- Pros: Faster charging, perfect alignment every time, stronger connection.
- Cons: You need a MagSafe-compatible phone and charger, which is a newer standard.
My Takeaway
Honestly, after trying both, MagSafe feels like a significant upgrade. The convenience of the magnetic alignment and the faster charging speed are big wins for me. I used to only use wired charging. And only used Qi wireless charging when I really need to.
But now, I could see myself using wireless charging way more often just for convenience sake alone. It’s just so much easier to slap the phone on the charger and not worry about it.
Qi’s fine, it gets the job done, but it feels a bit clunky in comparison. If you’re still rocking an older phone, it’s perfectly usable. But if you’re thinking about upgrading, or if you already have a MagSafe-compatible device, I’d definitely recommend giving MagSafe a shot. It’s just a more polished experience, in my humble opinion.
