So, my desk was looking kinda drab. You know how it gets. Same old black keyboard, grey mouse mat… felt a bit lifeless while I was working or just messing around online. I spend hours here, right? Figured I needed a small change, something easy.

Saw some setups online, people with colorful keyboards. Pink caught my eye. Not usually my color, honestly, but it looked cheerful. Decided, why not? Let’s get some pink keycaps.

Finding the Things

Easier said than done, let me tell you. Started searching. Wow. There’s like, a million shades of pink. Baby pink, hot pink, salmon pink, pastel pink. Then there’s the different shapes, the letters on top, letters on the side, no letters at all. And materials? ABS, PBT… honestly, my head was spinning a bit. Just wanted some pink caps, didn’t expect a whole education.

Almost bought a cheap set right away, but then I read some stuff about them feeling greasy quick. Didn’t want that. Spent maybe two evenings just browsing, comparing photos, trying to figure out what ‘profile’ meant. Felt kinda silly putting so much thought into bits of plastic, but hey, if you’re gonna do it, might as well try to get something decent.

Finally settled on a PBT set. Supposedly last longer, don’t get shiny. Found a shade that wasn’t too loud, kinda soft. Hit the order button.

The Swap

Package arrived a few days later. Just a simple box, nothing fancy. Got my keyboard, got the little tool they give you for pulling keys off – looks like weird tweezers.

Started pulling the old black keys off. Pop, pop, pop. Kinda satisfying, actually. Then came putting the new pink ones on. Mostly easy, just push ’em down till they click. BUT, the big keys were tricky. The space bar, the shift keys… they have these little wire things underneath. Took me a few tries to get them seated right. Felt like I was performing surgery on a tiny patient.

  • Pulled all the old black caps off.
  • Cleaned the keyboard base. Surprising amount of dust under there.
  • Carefully pushed the new pink caps on, one by one.
  • Fumbled with the space bar stabilizer wire for like 10 minutes.
  • Double-checked if all keys were facing the right way. Almost put the ‘N’ key on upside down.

End Result

And then… done. Stepped back and looked. Yeah, it definitely wasn’t drab anymore. The pink was actually quite nice against the black keyboard frame. Brightened things up considerably.

Typing feels a bit different too. The texture of these PBT caps is kinda rougher, in a good way. Doesn’t feel slippery like the old ones sometimes did. Took a bit to get used to, but I like it.

It’s funny how such a small thing changes the whole vibe of my little corner here. Didn’t cost much, took maybe half an hour of fiddling around. But looking at it now makes the desk feel a bit more… mine. A simple splash of color. Worth it, I’d say.
