Roasted by AI: What is it & Is AI Roasting You?

Alright, let me tell you what happened the other day. I’ve been hearing all this buzz about AI, you know? How it’s changing everything. So, I thought, okay, let’s give it a whirl. See what it’s really like, hands-on.

I had this piece of code I’d put together. Nothing too serious, just a little something for a personal project I tinker with now and then. It wasn’t perfect, but it kinda worked. I figured, why not let an AI take a look? Maybe it spots something I missed, suggests a smarter way to do things. Found one of those online AI tools that claims to review your code.

Feeding my code to the machine

Seemed easy enough. Copy, paste, click a button. I was expecting some plain, boring feedback. You know the type: “syntax error on line 50” or “this loop could be more efficient”. Just the facts, ma’am.

Well, that’s not what I got. Not even close. This AI didn’t just review my code; it decided to properly roast me. Like, full-on stand-up comic style, but about my coding habits.

It started off kinda polite, but then the sass started creeping in. Here’s some of the stuff it threw at me:

  • “Looking at this function… it’s certainly… a choice.”
  • “The way you handled error checking here is bold. Very… optimistic.”
  • “I see comments explaining what the code does, but maybe comments explaining why it does it in such a strange way would be more helpful?”
  • And the best one: “This part seems less ‘coded’ and more ‘happened’. Like you accidentally leaned on the keyboard for a bit.”

My reaction? Pretty surprised.

Honestly, at first, I was a bit miffed. Like, hey, you’re just a program, who are you to judge? But after a minute, I had to laugh. It was just so unexpected. And the annoying thing? Buried under all that digital sarcasm, some of the points were actually… kinda right. That part about optimistic error checking? Yeah, guilty. The ‘happened’ code? Okay, maybe I rushed that section.

So, there I was, getting absolutely schooled by lines of code. It felt weirdly personal, even though I know it’s just algorithms and data doing their thing. Didn’t get the dry, technical pointers I expected. I got roasted.

It’s strange, isn’t it? We build these tools to be logical, helpful assistants. But sometimes they come across with more attitude than your grumpy neighbor. Makes you think about what we’re really creating here. Are we making smart tools, or just really sarcastic parrots trained on the whole internet, including all the snark?

Anyway, I did actually go back and clean up my code based on some of the feedback, minus the sass. So maybe the roast worked? Still, getting critiqued like that by my computer felt… new. Definitely wasn’t expecting my coding session to turn into a comedy central roast special hosted by an AI. Makes me wonder what’ll happen next time I ask one for help.
