So, the other day, I was trying to adjust my thermostat from my phone like I always do, but the darn Ecobee app just wouldn’t respond. No matter how many times I tapped, swiped, or yelled at it, nothing happened. It was like my phone and thermostat were having a silent fight, and I was caught in the middle.
I tried force-closing the app and opening it again. Nope, still nothing. I thought, “Maybe it’s just my phone being wonky,” so I restarted it. You know, the good old turn-it-off-and-on-again trick. But even that didn’t work. At this point, I was starting to get a little frustrated.
Then I went to my thermostat itself. It was on, but it wasn’t responding to my touch. “Oh, great, now both of them are ganging up on me,” I thought. I pulled the Ecobee off the wall like I was ripping a bandaid off, waited for about 30 seconds, and then slapped it back on. It took a minute or two to reboot, but once it did, the touchscreen was working again.
Next Up, the App
I figured, “Okay, the thermostat’s fine, must be the app.” I double-checked to make sure my phone was connected to Wi-Fi. It was. Then I remembered something about checking app settings. This is what I did:
- First, I went to Settings, then iCloud, and then Keychain to make sure that was on.
- Next, I checked Settings again, found Ecobee in the list of apps, and made sure Home Data was enabled.
- Lastly, I checked Background App Refresh under Settings and Ecobee to make sure that was turned on too.
After all that, I opened the Ecobee app again, crossed my fingers, and… it worked! I could finally control my thermostat from my phone. What a relief!
Adding Devices
While I was in the app, I also saw that you could add other Ecobee devices. There’s a little plus icon in the top right corner. I haven’t added anything yet, but it’s good to know I can add cameras, switches, and sensors if I want to. If you haven’t installed the device yet, you can select “Install a device” and it will guide you through the process.
So yeah, that was my little adventure with my Ecobee. It was a bit of a headache at first, but I managed to fix it by rebooting the thermostat and checking a few settings on my phone. Hopefully, this helps someone else out there who might be having the same problem. It’s always something, right?
