Is There a Limit for Custom GPTs? Everything You Need to Know About Usage Caps!

Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with these custom GPTs lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a wild ride. I had this idea to create a chatbot that could help me with some writing tasks. You know, kind of like a digital assistant, but more tailored to my specific needs. I went ahead and got started.

First off, I had to figure out what kind of data I wanted to feed this thing. I gathered a bunch of documents, some articles, and a few other text files that I thought would be helpful. I mean, I wanted this chatbot to be smart, right?

When I got into the setup, that’s when I started hitting some walls. I found out that there’s a limit to how much stuff you can actually upload. The basic plan, it’s like, three custom chatbots, each with up to 1,000 pages and 30 million words. Then, there’s the standard plan with 10 custom chatbots, each with up to 5,000 pages and 60 million words.

And get this, each file you upload has a size limit too. It’s 512MB per file. So, if you’ve got some huge files, you’re gonna have to do some trimming. Not only that, but text and document files have a limit of 2 million tokens per file. Apparently, this token thing doesn’t apply to spreadsheets, though. And don’t even get me started on images, they have their own limits.

  • Basic Plan: 3 custom chatbots, up to 1,000 pages, 30 million words.
  • Standard Plan: 10 custom chatbots, up to 5,000 pages, 60 million words.
  • File upload limit: 512MB per file.
  • Text and document files: 2 million tokens per file.

So, yeah, it took a bit of trial and error, and honestly, some frustration, to get this chatbot working the way I wanted. I had to cut down some of my files, reorganize things, and just generally figure out how to work within these limits.

But, you know what? I finally got it up and running. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely helping me out with those writing tasks. It’s like having a little buddy who’s always there to give me a hand when I need it.

The takeaway here is, these custom GPTs can be super useful, but you’ve gotta be aware of the limits. And trust me, there are limits. It’s all about figuring out how to make the most of what you’ve got. So this experience got me thinking I’d share these things with everyone.
