Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my Synology NAS lately, trying to beef up its security. I mean, it’s holding all my precious data, right? So, I thought, why not throw a solid antivirus on there? That’s when I stumbled upon Bitdefender Antivirus for Synology NAS.
First off, I started digging around to see what my options even were. Turns out, the built-in antivirus on my DS216+II was, let’s just say, not the fastest. It took like two whole days to scan a measly 100k files. Seriously? Ain’t nobody got time for that!
So, I hit up the web, reading forums and articles. And this name kept popping up: Bitdefender. Now, I’d heard of Bitdefender before, they make some good stuff. But I found out you can’t just install it directly onto the NAS. Bummer.
But, there’s always a workaround, right? I found out about this thing called Bitdefender Box2. It’s like a little security hub for your whole home network. Cool concept. It promised network and device protection, sounded pretty good. Then there’s the “Armor Plus” thing, which seems like it is replacing Box2.
After comparing them, I decided to give Bitdefender a shot. It wasn’t a direct install, but it did offer something called “Storage Protection.” It works by scanning the files that are being accessed on the NAS. It’s not a full-blown antivirus running on the NAS itself, but it felt like a good middle ground.
I went ahead and purchased Bitdefender Internet Security. Found a sweet deal online, too. Score! I set it up, played around with the settings, and added some exceptions for certain webpages that I needed to bypass the antivirus. It was pretty straightforward.
Setting up the Storage Protection was a bit of a head-scratcher at first, but I found it in the policy settings. Once I got that configured, it was pretty much smooth sailing. Now, whenever a file gets accessed on my NAS, Bitdefender gives it a quick scan. It’s way faster than the built-in antivirus, and it gives me some peace of mind.
It might not be a perfect solution, but it’s definitely an improvement. I’m still exploring all the features, but so far, I’m pretty happy with how Bitdefender is working out for my Synology NAS. It’s like having a guard dog for my data, without slowing things down to a crawl. And that, my friends, is a win in my book.
- Started by realizing the built-in antivirus was too slow.
- Researched options and found Bitdefender.
- Learned it couldn’t be installed directly on the NAS.
- Considered Bitdefender Box2 for network security.
- Decided on Bitdefender Internet Security with Storage Protection.
- Purchased and installed Bitdefender.
- Configured exceptions and Storage Protection.
- Achieved faster scans and better peace of mind.
Honestly, I think more people should look into securing their NAS devices. It’s easy to overlook, but it’s super important. Anyway, that’s my little adventure with Bitdefender and my Synology NAS. Hope it helps someone out there!
