Choosing the Best Base for Concrete Slabs? (Avoid Common Mistakes)

Okay, so I’ve been tackling this backyard project, turning a patch of grass into a solid patio. The biggest question I had was: what’s the best base for concrete? I mean, you can’t just pour concrete onto dirt and expect it to last, right?

So, I started digging. Literally. First, I removed all the grass and topsoil. I aimed for about 4-6 inches down, making sure the area was relatively level. It was a bit of a workout, I’m not gonna lie.

My Base Layer Journey

Next up, I decided to experiment a little. I tested two options for my base:

  • Option 1: Crushed Stone. This is the method. Seemed like the most straightforward choice, I spread a decent layer 4 inches thick, ensuring to have a great compaction.
  • Option 2: Crushed Stone mix Sand..My neighbor recommended it, I added some sand on top of crushed Stone, to fill the gap,I spread a layer 5 inches thick.

For both options I used a plate compactor (rented it from the local hardware store) to really pack it down tight. This part’s super important – you want a solid, stable base that won’t shift around under the concrete.

After getting everything compacted, I built wooden forms around the perimeter to contain the wet concrete. Made sure they were level and securely staked in place, because nobody wants a wonky patio.

Finally, I was ready for the concrete! I mixed it up (again, rented a mixer – way easier than doing it by hand) and poured it into the forms, spreading it evenly with a shovel and a screed (basically a long, straight board). I gave the two patios the same amount of concrete.

Then came the waiting game. I let the concrete cure for a good few days, keeping it damp with a sprinkler. This helps it harden properly and prevents cracking.

After a week.I tested those two patios. I was surprised that option 1:Crushed stone, really a good stuff. it is better than my neighbor’s * 2 show a little crack.

The result? A rock-solid patio! I learned that a good base is ALL about that solid, compacted material underneath. Crushed stone is the star of the show, folks. Don’t skip that step!
