So, I decided it was time to get my audio setup sorted. I wanted to be able to use a decent headset with both my computer and my phone. Sounds simple, right? Well, it turned into a bit of a project, but I figured it out.
The Starting Point
First, I looked at what I had. My trusty old headset had a standard 3.5mm jack. My phone, of course, also had a 3.5mm jack (thank goodness, no dongles needed there!). But my computer… that was a different story. It had separate jacks for the microphone and headphones.
The Problem
My headset’s single 3.5mm plug, you could not plug directly into the computer, I needed an adapter. I remember those exist, I just haven’t bought it.
Finding a Solution
I hopped online and started searching. I quickly found what I needed – a splitter cable. It’s a simple little thing that takes the single 3.5mm plug and splits it into two: one for the microphone and one for the headphones. I ordered one, and it arrived a couple of days later.
The setup Process
- Unboxed the splitter cable. Nothing fancy, just a small plastic bag.
- Plugged the headset’s 3.5mm jack into the female end of the splitter.
- Plugged the two male ends of the splitter into the corresponding ports on my computer. One was pink (for the mic) and the other was green (for the headphones). Easy enough to figure out.
- Checked my phone, plug the headset to phone directly.
Testing it Out
I opened up the sound settings on my computer. I made sure the correct input (microphone) and output (headphones) devices were selected. Then I did a quick test call. Worked like a charm! The sound was clear, and the microphone picked up my voice perfectly. I did the same process to my phone, It also worked!
I also use some music to test it, works very well!
