So, I saw these cool “cup magnets” things online and thought, hey, I could probably make those! I’m always looking for ways to organize my messy workshop, and these seemed like a neat solution for storing small metal parts like screws, nuts, and bolts. Here’s how I went about it.
Gathering the Supplies
First, I needed to round up the materials. Obviously, I needed some cups. I found some old plastic ones in the back of a cabinet – you know, the kind you get from takeout and never throw away? Perfect! Then, the magnets. I dug through my junk drawer and found a bunch of those flat, round magnets – the promotional ones you get stuck on your fridge. Finally, I needed something to stick the magnets to the cups. I grabbed my trusty hot glue gun and some glue sticks. That was it!
Putting it All Together
The process was super simple. First, I warmed up my hot glue gun. While that was heating, I took one of the plastic cups and figured out where I wanted the magnet to go. I decided on the bottom, on the outside, so the cup could sit flat.
Once the glue gun was hot, I applied a generous dollop of hot glue to the back of a magnet. I pressed the magnet firmly onto the bottom of the cup and held it there for a few seconds until the glue cooled and hardened. It’s important to make sure you use enough glue, otherwise the magnet might pop off when you put stuff in the cup.
- Step 1: Hot glue on magnet.
- Step 2: Stick magnet to cup.
- Step 3: Hold until cool.
I repeated this process for all the cups and magnets I had. It went pretty quick, maybe 10-15 minutes total. I let them all cool down completely to make absolutely sure, that was it.
Testing and Using
After everything was cool, I tested them out. I grabbed some random screws and bolts from my workbench and dropped them into the cups. Then I stuck the cups to the metal shelf above my workbench. Success! They held perfectly, and now I have a super convenient way to keep those small parts from getting lost. They are easy to reach now.
It’s not a super complicated project, but it’s definitely a useful one. And it’s a great way to reuse those random magnets and cups you have lying around. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out! Might even make some more for my garage!
