I tried to learn drawing today, and I ran into a term called “atari stage.” I had no idea what that was, so I did a little digging.
First, I searched online for “what is the atari stage in terms of drawing.” I got a lot of different explanations, but most of them were kinda confusing. It seems like it’s a stage in drawing where you lay down the basic shapes and structure of your drawing, like a skeleton. But some people used the term differently, which made things even more confusing.
My Attempts

I tried to follow some tutorials that mentioned the atari stage. One tutorial I found said to start with simple shapes like circles and squares to build up the figure. So, I grabbed my sketchbook and gave it a shot. I drew a stick figure first, then tried to add some circles and ovals to represent the head, body, and limbs. It looked pretty messy, to be honest.

Another tutorial suggested using the atari stage to get the proportions right. I tried to draw a character using this approach. I started with a really rough sketch, just focusing on the overall size and placement of each part. Then I tried to refine it a bit, adding more details and making the shapes more accurate. It was a bit better than my first try, but still not great.
Still a Bit Confused
Honestly, I’m still not 100% sure what the atari stage really means. I guess it’s about getting the basic structure and proportions down before adding details. But different artists seem to have different ways of doing it. I need to practice more and see what works best for me.
I kept practicing for a few more hours, trying to apply the atari stage to different drawings. I drew some animals, some objects, and even attempted a portrait. It’s definitely a challenge, but I think I’m slowly getting the hang of it. It feels like it will take a lot of practice to get it right. But I won’t give up. I will keep at it and see if I can master this atari stage thing!
