Alright, so I’ve been messing around with speakers lately, specifically those Edifier ones, the R1280DB and the R1280DBs. Let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a journey figuring out which one’s the better fit for me.
First off, I got my hands on both sets. They’re both pretty compact, which is great cause I don’t have a ton of space. They say they can fill a room with sound, and honestly, they’re not wrong. I started with the R1280DB. It’s got all the controls on the main speaker, which they call the active one. You got your bass, treble, volume – the whole shebang. Plus, a little blue light that tells you it’s on. This thing’s got 42 watts of power, which, for its size, is pretty decent.
Connections Galore
I hooked it up to my computer using the Line In port. Super easy. Then I thought, “Hey, why not try the Optical port with my TV?” Worked like a charm. These speakers are made by a company called Edifier, came out of Beijing, China, back in 1996, apparently they have lots of factories or something.
Then I moved on to the R1280DBs. The main difference? It’s got a Sub Out port. So I grabbed an old subwoofer I had lying around, plugged it in, and boom – instant 2.1 system. The bass was noticeably better. It really added that extra oomph to the music and movies.
Switching It Up
- I spent a few days with each setup, listening to all kinds of music, watching movies, even playing some games.
- I played around with the remote, tried all the buttons – volume, mute, input switching – everything worked smoothly.
- The knobs on the side of the active speaker are handy too. I found myself using them more than I thought I would.
Honestly, the sound quality on both is pretty similar, without the subwoofer. But that Sub Out port on the R1280DBs is a game changer for me. I’m a bit of a bass head, so having that extra low-end makes a big difference.
In the end, I decided to stick with the R1280DBs. It wasn’t a huge price difference, and like I said, that subwoofer option sold me. Plus, being able to upgrade my setup later is a nice bonus. The main thing is, both sets are solid. It really comes down to whether you want that extra bass or not.
It’s funny how these little things can make such a difference. I mean, I went from just wanting some decent computer speakers to actually thinking about sound quality and setup options. Who knew?
Anyways I took out my old speakers and put these new ones in their place, connected everything the way I wanted, and it worked fine. That’s it, I am using my new speakers now.
