Exploring the Best DACs with Separate Power Supplies Now

Okay, so I’ve been messing around with DACs lately, trying to squeeze every last drop of audio quality out of my setup. And let me tell you, it’s a rabbit hole. One thing I kept running into was the idea of separate power supplies for DACs. Seemed like a potentially worthwhile tweak, so I decided to give it a shot.

First things first, I grabbed a couple of DACs that were known to respond well to power supply upgrades. I’m not gonna name brands, but think of the usual suspects in the mid-range audiophile space. Next, I started hunting for suitable power supplies. This is where it gets a bit tricky. You gotta make sure you’re getting the right voltage and current for your DAC, otherwise, you’re gonna fry something. I ended up going with a couple of linear power supplies from a reputable manufacturer. They weren’t cheap, but I figured it was worth investing in quality.

Then, the fun part: the actual installation. I carefully disconnected the stock power supplies from the DACs and hooked up the new linear power supplies. This involved some basic soldering in my case. I double-checked everything to make sure the polarity was correct and that all the connections were solid. You do NOT want to mess this part up.

After that, it was time to power everything on. I held my breath for a second, but thankfully, no smoke or sparks. The DACs lit up just fine. Now, the moment of truth: the listening test.

I fired up my favorite tracks, the ones I know inside and out. And you know what? I was actually surprised. The difference wasn’t night and day, but it was definitely noticeable. The soundstage seemed wider, the imaging felt more precise, and the overall sound was just a bit cleaner and more refined. It’s like taking a slightly blurry photo and bringing it into focus. The little details really popped.

Of course, it’s important to be realistic. A separate power supply isn’t going to magically transform a mediocre DAC into a high-end one. But for DACs that are already pretty good, I think it can provide a worthwhile improvement. It’s all about diminishing returns, though. You gotta ask yourself if the cost of the power supplies is worth the small bump in performance.

Here’s what I learned from this experiment:

  • Power supplies matter. They really do.
  • Do your research before buying anything. Make sure the power supply is compatible with your DAC.
  • Be careful when working with electronics. Disconnect the power before making any changes.
  • Don’t expect miracles. A separate power supply is not a magic bullet.
  • Listen carefully. The differences can be subtle, but they’re there.

Would I recommend this upgrade to everyone? Probably not. It’s a relatively expensive tweak that’s best suited for audiophiles who are already pretty happy with their setup but are looking for that extra bit of performance. But if you’re curious and willing to experiment, it can definitely be a fun and rewarding project.

So yeah, that’s my experience with DACs and separate power supplies. Hope this helps if you’re considering doing something similar!
