Okay, so I finally caved and got my kid a Gabb Watch. I’d heard good things, and honestly, the peace of mind of being able to reach him without giving him a full-blown smartphone was pretty appealing. But let me tell you, the setup wasn’t exactly plug-and-play. I figured I’d share my experience, just in case any other parents out there are wrestling with this thing.
The Unboxing
First things first, unboxing. Pretty standard stuff. The watch itself, a charging cable (magnetic, which is nice), and a little quick-start guide. The guide was…minimal. I mean, it told me to charge the watch, which, duh. But beyond that? Not super helpful.
Power Up and Pair
So, I plugged the watch in. The little charging indicator popped up, so far, so good. While that was happening, I downloaded the “MyGabb” app on my phone. This is where things got a little tricky.
- Create an account: You gotta create an account in the MyGabb app. Name, email, password – the usual drill.
- Adding the Device: This is important and I missied at the first time. In the app, I have to click “Add a Device.”
- Find the Number: I need to find the watch’s phone number, and type the number into the MyGabb app.
- Activation Code: After that, I found that I need a activation code to finish paring.
Getting Connected
Once the watch was paired, I thought I was home free. Nope. Now came the fun part: getting it connected to the cellular network. This involved:
I input my personal information, including the address, the credit card, etc.
Honestly, the app walked me through most of this pretty well, but it still felt a little clunky. I had to double-check a couple of things, and it definitely took longer than I expected. I also have to choose the service plan for my watch.
Setting Up Contacts & Features
After I pay for the service, the watch is finally work! Then, I start to add some contacts. You do all of this through the MyGabb app, which makes sense. You don’t want your kid adding random numbers to their watch. I put in myself, my wife, grandma, and a couple of other trusted folks.
I also played around with some of the other features, like setting up custom preset messages for my kid to send. I also looked that I can track where the kid is in my app.
The Verdict (So Far)
All in all, the Gabb Watch setup was a bit more involved than I anticipated. It wasn’t hard, just…fiddly. But, now that it’s up and running, I’m pretty happy with it. My kid loves the independence, and I love knowing I can reach him (and see where he is) without handing him the keys to the entire internet. So, yeah, a bit of a pain to set up, but worth it in the end, I think.
