Okay, so I had this crazy idea to make a pair of sunglasses with an American flag design. It sounded cool in my head, so I just went for it!
Getting Started
First, I grabbed a cheap pair of sunglasses. Didn’t want to ruin anything expensive in case this whole thing went sideways. Then, I gathered my supplies:
- Red, white, and blue paint (the acrylic kind, you know?)
- Some tiny paintbrushes
- Masking tape – gotta keep those lines crisp!
- A sealant spray, to protect the paint job
The Messy Part
I started by taping off the lenses, because I definitely didn’t want to paint over those. Then, I taped out the stripes on one side of the frames. It was trickier than I thought, trying to get them even. I used red and white paint, simple enough.
The other side was for the “stars” part. I taped a square area and painted it blue. Now, for the stars, I was thinking of using a stencil, but I didn’t have one small enough. So, I just freehanded them with a tiny brush and white paint. They weren’t perfect, more like little blobs, but hey, it’s handmade, right?
Finishing Touches
After everything dried (I waited like a whole day, just to be sure), I carefully peeled off the tape. There were a few smudges, but nothing too major. I touched them up with a bit more paint.
Finally, I sprayed the whole thing with the sealant. This is important, so the paint doesn’t chip off the first time I wear them. Let that dry completely too.
And that’s it! My DIY American flag sunglasses. They’re a little rough around the edges, but I think they look pretty awesome. Definitely a unique pair of shades for summer!
