Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this “rings of security” idea, and let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a journey. I started with basically nothing, just a vague concept in my head.
My Initial Idea
My first step was to just to figure out what I really wanted. I pictured a simple setup, something I could easily understand and manage. No fancy stuff, just basic protection.
Getting My Hands Dirty
I began by experimenting my local pc. I set up a basic firewall – nothing too complicated, just enough to block the most obvious threats.
- First Ring: The Firewall. Like the outer wall of a castle.
It’s my first line of defense.I just played around with the built-in Windows Firewall to block unwanted incoming connections.I made sure only the necessary ports were * example,80(HTTP) and 443(HTTPS) because it is a must-have.
- Second Ring:User Account * the guards at the castle gate.
I created a standard user account for daily tasks. I only use the administrator account when absolutely *’s easy for setup!
- Third Ring:Basic Antivirus and * the soldiers patrolling inside the castle.
I installed a decent antivirus and anti-malware program.I opted for free, reliable options to keep things simple and on budget.I scheduled regular scans to catch anything that slips through.
Experiment
I thought, “What if I try to access something I shouldn’t?” So, I did some basic testing. I tried connecting from other devices using ports that should be blocked. It worked! The firewall did its job.
Problems and Solutions
I got a few error messages at first, so, I have to added some rules to the firewall to allow specific programs through. Not a big deal, I just did some Google searches to understand what to allow. Then, it went well.
Realizations
This whole thing made me realize how important it is to have layers of protection. It’s not just about one big, strong wall. It’s about having multiple fallback points, just in case. I feel a lot better about my setup now. It’s not perfect, but it’s way better than before. And, I have to keep testing and keeping updating!
