Okay, so I’ve been rocking a MagSafe charger with my iPhone for a while now, and I started getting paranoid about whether it was messing with my battery’s long-term health. I kept seeing mixed stuff online, so I decided to do my own little experiment.
My MagSafe Experiment Begins
First, I grabbed my iPhone 13 Pro, which was my daily driver at the time. I made sure its battery health was still pretty good, sitting at around 95% capacity. I vowed to only use the MagSafe charger for a solid three months. No regular lightning cable charging allowed!
I started by noting down the battery health percentage and the date. I even took screenshots, just to be extra sure. I used the phone as I normally would – calls, browsing, social media, the occasional game. Pretty average stuff, really.
The Three-Month Check-In
After three months of exclusively MagSafe charging, I checked the battery health again. It had dropped to 91%. Okay, that’s a 4% drop. Not amazing, but not terrible either. Was it the MagSafe, or just normal battery wear and tear? It was hard to say definitively.
I decided to switch things up. I put away the MagSafe and went back to using my trusty old lightning cable for another three months. I kept my phone usage pretty much the same, trying to be as consistent as possible.
Back to the Old Ways
At the end of the second three-month period, I eagerly checked the battery health again. It was now at 89%. So, a 2% drop this time. Hmm, that was less than the MagSafe period, but still within the realm of what I’d consider normal degradation.
My Very Unscientific Conclusion
Honestly, my little experiment didn’t give me any super clear answers. I noticed it seems like the wear and tear on my battery is faster than I expected.
Here’s my take, for what it’s worth:
- MagSafe charging is probably fine for your battery in the long run.
- Slightly faster degradation? Maybe, but it’s hard to say for sure without more rigorous testing.
- Convenience is a big plus for MagSafe.
So, I am continuing to use my MagSafe charger, but I might throw in a wired charge every now and then. That’s my two cents!
