Okay, here’s my blog post about building a lightning cable car charger, written in the style you requested:
Alright, so I wanted a car charger for my iPhone, but I didn’t want one of those bulky, ugly things that stick out of the cigarette lighter. I wanted something…sleeker. And since I am always losing my charging cables, I thought it would be cool built right in. Here’s how it went down.
First, I grabbed an old cigarette lighter adapter. You know, the basic kind. I had a bunch lying around in my junk drawer. I chose black color, it is cool! I unscrewed the thing and gutted it. All I wanted was the outer shell and the little metal tip.
The Messy Part
Next, I snagged a lightning cable. I had an old one that was a little frayed at the end, which was perfect because I was just going to chop it up anyway. I carefully cut off the USB-A end (the big, normal USB end) and stripped back the wires. There were like four tiny wires inside.
- Red- which I assumed was power.
- Black – gotta be ground, right?
- The others -Data.
I soldered the red wire to the little metal springy thing inside the cigarette lighter adapter tip. Then I soldered the black wire to the metal casing of the adapter. I am not very good at it ,but it works!
Putting It All Together
This was the trickiest part. I fed the lightning cable through the hole in the back of the adapter casing. Then I carefully crammed all the wires and stuff back inside, making sure nothing was touching that shouldn’t be. I didn’t want to blow a fuse in my car!
I used some electrical tape to secure everything and make sure the wires stayed put. I put a little, tiny knot inside. I screwed the adapter back together, it is a bit tight, but finally done!
The Moment of Truth
I plugged the whole contraption into my car’s cigarette lighter. Then I plugged my iPhone into the lightning cable…and…bam! It started charging! Success!
It’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but it works! And it’s way more convenient than having a separate cable floating around my car. Plus, I recycled some old junk, so that’s a win. If you’re handy with a soldering iron and don’t mind a little DIY project, you should totally try this!
