MacBook Air Macbookair6 2 Review: Is This Older Model Still Worth Buying in 2024?

Okay, so I got this MacBook Air, specifically the macbookair6 2 model. It’s not the newest one, but it’s what I have. I’ve been using it for a while now and wanted to share my experience with it.

First off, I bought this one used. I went through all the usual checks to make sure I wasn’t getting a dud. Powered it up, checked the battery cycle, poked around the system info, you know, the basic stuff. It seemed alright, so I pulled the trigger.

Initially, I just used it for basic tasks. Browsing the web, writing some documents, and watching videos. It handled all that fine. The screen, even though it’s not the latest technology, looked pretty good to me. It’s a 13-inch-ish, so it’s easy to carry around.

Then, I started pushing it a bit harder. I installed a few more apps, like photo editing software and even some older games. I found that it handles the casual stuff, like a simple game, just okay. It wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, but it was playable.

After some months, I decided to do some upgrades. The first thing I did was swap out the SSD. That was a bit of a hassle, had to open the thing up and be careful not to mess anything up, but I got it done. It made a big difference in loading times.

Then, I tried to install more RAM, but turns out, you can’t actually upgrade the RAM on this model. It’s soldered onto the motherboard. Bummer, but it is what it is.

The next step, I attempted to install a new operating system. I went with the latest one that this model officially supports. That process was straightforward, just followed the usual prompts.

  • What I did:
    • Bought a used MacBook Air (macbookair6 2).
    • Used it for basic tasks.
    • Tried some light gaming.
    • Upgraded the SSD.
    • Tried to upgrade RAM (failed).
    • Installed the newest operating system.

Overall, it’s been a decent machine. I mean, it’s not a powerhouse, but for what I use it for, it gets the job done. It’s pretty light, so it’s easy to carry. The battery life is also pretty good, it can handle all day with normal use. If you’re looking for something simple and you’re on a budget, maybe a used MacBook Air like this one could work for you too. Just don’t expect to run the latest games or do any heavy video editing. This model is a bit old, so I know that it was announced in July of 2022 for a little more than one thousand bucks.

Hope this little rundown of my experience is helpful to someone out there. Just sharing my real-life use case, you know?
