My Hunt for the Right S8 Plus Cover
Alright, let’s talk about finding a decent cover for the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. When I first got that phone, loved the screen, the design… but wow, holding it felt like juggling soap. Knew right away I couldn’t carry it around naked. Too risky. That glass back and front looked gorgeous but screamed ‘expensive accident waiting to happen’.
So, the search began. First place I looked was online, naturally. Man, the options were overwhelming. You got your super thin ones, your bulky rugged ones, flip covers, wallet cases, clear ones, colored ones… endless scrolling. Then I popped into a couple of local phone shops. Same story, tons of choices, hard to know what’s actually good just by looking at it on a shelf or a tiny picture online.
My first buy was pretty basic. Just grabbed a cheap, clear silicone TPU case. Thought it would show off the phone’s design while adding some grip. Well, it added grip alright, but it felt kinda flimsy. Didn’t give me much confidence if I actually dropped the thing. And within like, a month? It started getting that ugly yellow tint. Looked pretty grubby. Not exactly what I wanted.
Trying Out Different Styles
Okay, so cheap clear case was a bust. Back to the drawing board. I figured I needed something a bit more substantial, but I also didn’t want a massive brick in my pocket. I really liked the slim feel of the S8 Plus itself.
Next, I tried one of those hybrid cases. You know, the ones with a harder plastic back and softer TPU sides? Found one that looked okay online, reviews seemed decent. It arrived, snapped it on. Felt much more protective, definitely. The corners had extra padding. But… it added noticeable bulk. Took away from that sleek S8 Plus feel I liked. Used it for a few weeks, it did its job protection-wise, but I wasn’t totally sold on the feel.
Then I briefly considered a wallet case. Seemed practical, carry cards and phone together. Ordered one. When it came, putting my cards in made it really thick. And opening the flap every single time I wanted to use the phone got annoying fast. Plus, I worried about the cards scratching the screen over time, even with the flap closed. That one didn’t last long on my phone at all.
Finding What Worked for Me
After those attempts, I kinda knew what I was really after:
- Good grip: Essential for that slippery phone.
- Decent protection: Enough to handle everyday bumps and maybe a short drop, especially on the corners and screen edges (raised lip).
- Minimal bulk: Didn’t want to lose the phone’s slim profile entirely.
- No yellowing nonsense: If it was clear, it needed to stay clear. If colored, just stay looking decent.
I ended up going back to a TPU style, but from a more reputable brand this time. Spent a little more money. I picked up a matte black TPU case, I think it was a Spigen Rugged Armor or something similar. It wasn’t truly ‘rugged’ like some of the tank-like cases, but it had a nice texture for grip, slightly reinforced corners, and a raised edge around the screen and camera.
This one stuck. It felt good in the hand, didn’t add too much thickness, and the matte black didn’t show fingerprints or scratches easily. It just felt like a good balance. I used that style of case for most of the time I had the S8 Plus. Dropped the phone a couple of times from pocket height onto tile or concrete, and thankfully, the phone survived without a scratch thanks to the case. The case itself got a few scuffs, but hey, that’s its job, right? Better the case than the phone.
So yeah, finding the right phone cover was a bit of a process. Went through a few duds before landing on something that worked for daily use. It’s really about figuring out what you personally need – maximum protection, slim style, or something in between.
