Alright, so today I wanted to mess around with getting my tasks from Things 3 to show up in Fantastical. You know, just to see everything I’ve got going on in one place. It’s not something I absolutely needed, but I was curious if it was possible and how it’d look.
First off, I made sure both apps were installed on my device. I mean, that’s a no-brainer, right? You can’t really get them talking to each other if they’re not both there.
Then I started poking around in Fantastical. I figured there had to be a way to add events quickly, and yeah, there is! It’s called “quick add mode” it seems. I tried to add a task with the name of one of my to-dos and used the notes from Things 3 as extra details. Just to see if it works. I also set the event duration for an hour, I figured most tasks take me about that long.
Now, I know there are some fancy ways to automate this, like this thing called Zapier that says can connect the two apps without needing to code. But honestly, I’m not that tech-savvy, and I wanted to keep it simple for now.
Other tools
- Google Tasks – I could probably do the same thing there.
- Microsoft 365 tasks – Or maybe even this one.
But I’ve gotten so used to the keyboard shortcuts in Things 3. Especially CTRL + CMD + Space on my Mac. It’s just too easy to quickly capture tasks that pop into my head. So, sticking with Things 3 for task creation feels like the better move for me.
I did see a mention online about some “legacy paid, non-subscription version” of Fantastical, maybe that had some special two-way integration features. But I’m on the subscription model, so I didn’t look into that too much.
Anyway, after playing around for a bit, I got some of my to-dos to show up as events in Fantastical. It’s kinda cool to see them there, mixed in with my appointments and other calendar stuff. I don’t know if I’ll keep it this way permanently. But it was a fun little experiment to try out!
It wasn’t a smooth ride, took some trial and error. But hey, that’s how you learn, right? Figuring things out by doing is definitely my style.
