Okay, here’s my experience making a silicone case with MagSafe:
So, I wanted a new phone case, and I really dig those MagSafe ones that snap onto chargers and stuff. But, you know, they can be kinda pricey. I figured, “Hey, I can probably just make one myself!” Turns out, it’s a bit more involved than I initially thought, but still totally doable.
Getting Started
First, I grabbed a plain, cheap silicone case. The kind you can find anywhere. The color didn’t really matter since I planned on customizing it anyway. The important thing was that it was a basic, soft silicone case.
Next, I needed the MagSafe part. I ended up ordering a MagSafe ring online, and you will be easy to find many offer. Make sure you get the kind that’s just the magnetic ring, not the whole charger assembly.
Putting it Together
This is where things got a little tricky. I needed to figure out the exact placement for the MagSafe ring on the inside of the case. I used my phone and an existing MagSafe charger to find the sweet spot where it snapped on securely. I marked that spot on the inside of the case with a pen.
Then came the adhesive. I tried a couple of different glues. Regular super glue didn’t seem to hold very well on the silicone. It kept peeling off. Finally,I used this stuff called E6000. It’s a flexible adhesive that’s pretty strong. I applied a thin layer of E6000 to the back of the MagSafe ring, and also to the inside of the case where I made that mark.
- Apply a little adhesive: Just on the ring, just the case, or both of them.
- Press together and clean all over:Carefully align the magnetic ring.
I carefully pressed the MagSafe ring onto the inside of the case, making sure it was lined up perfectly with my mark. Then, I wiped away any excess glue that squeezed out. It’s important to keep it clean, or it’ll look messy.
The Waiting Game
This was the hardest part! I had to let the adhesive fully cure. The E6000 instructions said to wait 24-72 hours. I propped the case up so that the MagSafe ring wasn’t touching anything, and just left it alone. Patience is key here, or the ring might not stick properly.
The Final Result
After a full 48 hours, I checked on the case. The adhesive was set, and the MagSafe ring felt really secure. I snapped my phone into the case, and then tested it out with my MagSafe charger. It worked perfectly! The phone snapped right on and started charging. Success!
I’m pretty stoked with how it turned out. It’s not as polished as a store-bought case, but it’s functional, and I made it myself! Plus, I saved some money. If you’re looking for a fun little project, and you want a MagSafe case without spending a ton, I definitely recommend giving this a try.
