Today, I was scribbling away on my Surface, making some notes for my new project, when all of a sudden, my Surface Pen started acting weird. It felt like it was running out of ink or something, you know? The lines were all faded and broken, not smooth at all. Super annoying, especially when you’re in the flow.
First, I thought, “Okay, maybe it’s just the app being buggy.” So I closed and reopened the app I was using. Nope, still the same issue. The pen was still writing like it was on its last legs.
Then, I tried using the pen in a different app, just to make sure. I opened OneNote and tried to write something there. Same problem! So, it wasn’t the app’s fault, it was definitely the pen.
Next, I remembered reading somewhere that sometimes the pen tip can be the problem. I carefully took out the pen tip and put it back in, you know, reseating it. I even tried swapping it out for a new tip that I had lying around. But guess what? Still no luck. The pen was still writing all faint and patchy.
Alright, time to check the battery. I twisted open the top of the pen and took out the AAAA battery. It looked fine, but who knows, maybe it was low on juice. I popped in a fresh battery, just to be safe. But, you guessed it, the problem was still there.
At this point, I was starting to get a bit frustrated. I decided to do a quick search online, and a lot of people were suggesting to run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. Sounded fancy, but it was pretty easy to find. I ran the toolkit, and it checked for all sorts of things. It even checked for Windows Updates, which I installed. Still, my pen was acting up.
Okay, deep breaths. I remembered another tip about restarting the pen. It sounded weird, but I was willing to try anything. I pressed and held the button on the top of the pen for about 10 seconds, just like the instructions said. And guess what? That did nothing! The pen still wasn’t writing properly. It was like the digital ink was just drying up.
