Okay, so, I decided to build a sandbox for my little ones. You know, the kind you see in backyards, filled with sand for kids to play in. Since those little guys love nothing more than to dig, shovel, and get all covered in sand, I thought, why not?
First off, I started by picking a good spot in the yard. I wanted it to be easily visible from the kitchen window so I could keep an eye on them while they played. Then, I got to work clearing the area, making sure it was all level and free of any big rocks or roots.
Next up, I built the frame. I used some decent wood I picked up from the local hardware store, nothing too fancy, just some sturdy planks. I didn’t use any railroad ties. Those things can cause splinters and might have some nasty stuff in them, and I definitely didn’t want my kids getting hurt.
I measured and cut the wood to the size I wanted the sandbox to be, then screwed the pieces together to form a square. I made sure the corners were nice and secure, so the whole thing wouldn’t fall apart when the kids were playing rough.
Once the frame was done, I lined the bottom with a weed barrier. This was to stop any pesky weeds from growing up through the sand. I overlapped the edges a bit to make sure nothing could sneak through.
Now came the fun part – filling it with sand! I ordered a bunch of play sand, the kind that’s specifically made for sandboxes. It’s cleaner and safer than the stuff you’d just dig up from the ground. It took a few trips to get it all in there, but I managed to fill the frame to a good level, leaving some space at the top so the sand wouldn’t spill out everywhere.
Cover it up!
- Finding a Cover: I looked around for something to use as a cover.
- Using a Tarp: I ended up using a heavy-duty tarp.
- Securing the Tarp: I used some bricks to weigh down the edges.
I also made sure to get a cover for the sandbox. I’d heard that these things can turn into giant litter boxes for neighborhood cats if you leave them uncovered, and I didn’t want that. A simple tarp weighted down with some bricks did the trick.
And there you have it! My very own DIY sandbox. The kids absolutely love it, and it keeps them entertained for hours. Plus, it’s a great way for them to get some fresh air and exercise. And I must say that watching them playing in the sandbox that I built for them brings an incredible feeling of satisfaction. It feels great to create something with my own hands that brings so much joy to my children. It’s really good.
