Today, I wanted to mess around with Suno and figure out how to get pauses in a song. It’s not super obvious, so I figured I’d share what I learned after some trial and error.
Experimenting with Brackets
First, I remembered reading somewhere that Suno uses these brackets, like “[…]”, for instrumental sections. So, my initial thought was, “Maybe I can just put empty brackets in there, and it’ll create a pause?” Makes sense, right?
I went into Suno, typed out some lyrics, and then strategically placed empty brackets “[]” where I wanted the pauses to be. I hit create, listened to the result… and nope. No pause. The song just played straight through as if those brackets weren’t even there.
Okay, back to the drawing board. I figured maybe it needed something inside the brackets, even if it wasn’t actual lyrics. So, I tried a few things:
- “[ ]” (just a space): Still no pause.
- (a hyphen): Nope.
- (the classic ellipsis): Getting warmer… but still not quite a full stop.
The Slight Pause
The ellipsis “[…]” did seem to create a slight hesitation, like a breath between words. It wasn’t a dramatic pause, but it was definitely something. It is the closest thing I can make it with.
If you need that tiny break, the ellipsis trick might be enough. But for a real, noticeable pause, still not good enough.
I am going to keep try other symbols or words inside the brackets. I’ll update this post if I find something better than “[…]”.
