Okay, so check this out, I had this idea kicking around in my head for ages. Basically, I wanted a phone holder that could also be a selfie stick. You know, something that was both functional and kinda cool looking. So, I decided to just go for it and build one myself.
First things first, I grabbed some materials. I had some leftover PVC pipe from a plumbing project, so I figured that would be perfect for the main body. Then, I found an old phone case that I wasn’t using anymore – this would be the base for holding the phone. I also needed a few nuts and bolts, some strong glue, and a handle grip (I snagged one from an old bike).
The first thing I did was cut the PVC pipe to the length I wanted for the selfie stick. I made it about 3 feet long – seemed like a good size. Then, I cut a slot in the phone case so it could slide onto the pipe. I had to be careful with this part, didn’t want to wreck the case.
Next up, I glued the phone case onto the PVC pipe. I used some heavy-duty epoxy to make sure it was super secure. I let that dry overnight because I didn’t want it falling apart when I was trying to take a sweet selfie.
While the glue was drying, I worked on the handle. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the PVC pipe and attached the bike handle grip with a bolt and nut. This gave me something comfy to hold onto. I even added a little wrist strap just in case I got clumsy and dropped it.
After everything was dry and secure, I tested it out. The phone fit snugly in the case, and the handle felt good in my hand. I extended my arm and snapped a few photos. Not bad, right? But then I realized I needed a way to actually take the photos without having to reach all the way to the screen.
So, I ordered a cheap Bluetooth shutter remote online. It was like five bucks. Once it arrived, I paired it with my phone and figured out a way to attach it to the handle. I just used some zip ties. Classy, I know, but it worked.
And that’s it! I had a phone holder selfie stick that I made myself. It’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but it does the job. I’ve used it on hikes, at concerts, and just hanging out with friends. It’s pretty cool to say I built it myself, you know?
Lessons learned:
- PVC pipe is your friend.
- Strong glue is essential.
- Don’t underestimate the power of zip ties.
I might try to improve the design in the future. Maybe add a telescoping feature or something. But for now, I’m pretty happy with my DIY phone holder selfie stick. It gets the job done, and that’s all that matters!
