Okay, so the other day I was trying to watch something on HBO Max, and the subtitles were stuck on. Like, permanently on. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get rid of them. It was driving me nuts!
I went into the settings, you know, the little gear icon thingy. I clicked around, messed with the subtitle options – turned them off, turned them on, changed the language, even tried Klingon (just kidding, they don’t have Klingon… yet). Nothing worked. They were still there, mocking me with their persistent presence.
I even tried restarting the app. Closed it out completely, relaunched it, picked a different show… subtitles. Everywhere. Always.
Then I thought, “Maybe it’s the device?” So I switched from my smart TV to my phone. Nope. Still there. Then I tried my tablet. Same problem. Subtitles, subtitles, subtitles!
Finally, I did what any sane person would do. I searched the internet. Turns out, I’m not the only one with this issue.
Dig and Search
- I scrolled through a bunch of online forums.
- Other people were complaining about the same exact thing.
- Someone mentioned it might be an account-level setting, rather than a device-specific one.
A lightbulb went off. Account settings! I hadn’t even considered that.
So I went to the HBO Max website on my computer, logged in, and dug through my profile settings. And there it was! Deep in the accessibility options, there was a “Subtitles Always On” toggle. It was switched ON. How did that even happen? I have no idea.
I clicked it OFF, saved the changes, and went back to my TV. And… poof! The subtitles were gone. Finally! Peace at last.
So, the moral of the story is: if you’re having subtitle issues on HBO Max, and you’ve tried everything on your device, check your account settings on the website. It might just save you a lot of frustration. It’s a pretty dumb place to put that setting, if you ask me, but at least I figured it out eventually.
